The problem

Teams get stuck for ordinary reasons: someone left, a deadline moved, a production bug will not reproduce, or a feature turned out larger than estimated. What they need is not a long consulting engagement — it is someone who can read the existing code and be useful this week.

The solution

Scoped engagements that start by understanding the existing system: how it is structured, what it depends on, how it is deployed, and what must not break. Then a targeted change, delivered in the project’s own conventions rather than a rewrite.

Technical architecture

A simplified, public-safe view of how the pieces fit together.

Notes for the team

Leave the team able to maintain the change

How a short engagement is typically sequenced.

My contribution

  • Production issue investigation: reproducing defects, reading logs and tracing failures to their source.
  • Bug fixing in unfamiliar codebases without disturbing surrounding behaviour.
  • Feature development to complete in-flight work under deadline.
  • API development and extension against existing contracts.
  • Database fixes: schema corrections, data repair scripts and query tuning.
  • UI development and front-end fixes on established applications.
  • Performance troubleshooting on slow endpoints, queries and pages.
  • Legacy application support and incremental modernisation.
  • Technical consultation on approach, trade-offs and sequencing.

Engineering challenges

No documentation, no original author

Often the fastest route in is the data model and the deployment configuration rather than the code — they show what the system actually does, not what it was intended to do.

Fixing without breaking

In a codebase you did not write, the risk is not the fix but everything adjacent to it. Small, reviewable changes with an explicit reproduction and verification step are worth more than clever ones.

Key features

  • Fast ramp-up in existing codebases
  • Scoped, reviewable changes
  • Production issue investigation
  • Clear handover notes so the team can maintain the work

Outcome

Teams got unblocked and kept their delivery dates. Client names and commercial details are confidential and are not published here.

Lessons learned

  • Understanding the system is most of the work; the code change is usually small.
  • The value in a short engagement is leaving the team able to maintain what you built.
