The problem

A learning platform needed to manage users and cohorts, organise course content in a predictable structure, track learner progress through that content, and give administrators a view of who had completed what.

The solution

Work across an existing PHP application: user and cohort management, a course/module/lesson content model, progress tracking tied to that model, administrative dashboards and the APIs behind them.

Technical architecture

A simplified, public-safe view of how the pieces fit together.

My contribution

  • Implemented course and content management features and their supporting endpoints.
  • Built learner progress tracking against the course content hierarchy.
  • Developed administrative dashboards for enrolment and completion views.
  • Extended role handling so administrators, instructors and learners saw appropriate functionality.
  • Worked within an established codebase, matching existing conventions rather than introducing a parallel style.

Engineering challenges

Modelling content that kept changing shape

Course structures varied between programmes. A rigid schema would have needed a migration for every new format, so the content hierarchy was kept generic with type-specific details held alongside it.

Progress that stayed correct when content changed

Editing a published course risks invalidating existing progress. Tying progress to stable content identifiers, rather than to positions in a list, kept historical completion meaningful after reordering.

Key features

  • User, role and cohort management
  • Course, module and lesson content structures
  • Enrolment and learner progress tracking
  • Administrative dashboards and completion reporting
  • REST APIs behind content and progress features

Outcome

Administrators could manage content and see progress in one place, and learner state stayed consistent as courses were revised.

Lessons learned

  • Content models should expect to change; identifiers should not.
  • Matching an existing codebase’s conventions beats importing your own preferences into it.
